Burgh Island - The Real Agatha Christie Country
Families searching for a long stretch of sandy beach, with shallow water for paddling, rock pools for exploring, a beach shop and café, would be hard pushed to find anywhere better than Bigbury on- Sea. The sheltered waters are also great for wind surfing and kite surfing. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Blue Flag beach is joined by a causeway to the luxury art-deco hotel on Burgh Island, which can be visited by sea tractor or on foot at low tide. The hotel was once patronized by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Noël Coward and Dame Agatha Christie. Have a drink at the 14th century Pilchard Inn, but don’t forget to watch the tide.
Just across the River Avon is the magnificent sandy beach of Bantham. It is a favourite location for surfers, but also a haven for dog walkers (in summer only parts of the beach). The Old Sloop Inn has some of the finest pub food in the area.
